I wanted to wait a while and make a thorough review. For starters this was a big step in the right direction buying this book. I love how the book doesn't dwell on the acts in a forthright way, but gently talks about sensitive matters. This is important for me as I have gone to counseling and felt that I was regurgitating the past to my therapist with the same apathetic expression. It just made me feel like I was their two o clock till the next which is how no one wants to feel. In no way am I advocating for no therapy but this book made me feel like I wasn't alone and I needed that. The problems in this book were spot on and I cried because I felt that the healing could finally begin. I will say that nothing beats having a good support system, so if you have family and friends this will help a lot. It was time to be honest and conquer the hurt that I was running away from. So if you decide to purchase this book, know that you will find something worth looking forward to.
Warning: THIS IS VERY TRIGGERINGThis book is to ONLY be read when you are in the right frame of mind and head space- as someone who has training, and education in therapy, and who has dealt with trauma personally, it was even tough for me to get through. However it is well worth it.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has been sexually assaulted, molested or other sexual trauma. I have not been able to date a man for the past 20 years due to my past trauma. When I ran into an old friend, we wanted to start dating. The fact that I new him made me feel safer. He recommended seeing a sex therapist who deals with past traumas that keep you moving forward and trusting again. She recommended this book for me and my boyfriend. I did not read the parts where people talk about their past experiences, but those stories were great for my boyfriend to understand what I was going through. THen there is a complete section in the back that helped me to move on with my life, and be able to say "NO" to my boyfriend when I felt sexually pressured.THis book, as any other couples book, will really benefit you if your boyfriend, lover, new relationship partner reads it also. It is up to date as far as psychology goes, and has allowed me to come out of my shell and start a relationship again!
This was a very insightful book by a author who knows the subject that she is writing about. But what I thought was most helpful was that she actually gave you skills to practice a long with exercises that helped you understand where you were at in your journey and where you wanted to go. Very practical advise. I highly recommend.
Difficult but completely life-altering. I would recommend to anyone who has ever had any sexually abusive, inappropriate, or confusing experiences directly or second-hand. No bible verses, no nonsense. Exactly the book I have needed to read my whole life. I have never found anything like it, and it is extremely empowering and challenging and a necessary supplement to my therapy.
This book is really amazing. It is a Bible of healthy views about sex. I think that everyone should read it, not only the ones that were sexually abused. But for those who were, it is really going to start a revolution in your life. I am halfway through it (it's quite thick), but I already feel I have learned a lot. But what is more, I feel I am reclaiming the power over my sexuality and - thought it might seem shocking - my innocence. I am so grateful to Wendy to have written this book! Finding it was my private miracle. I definitely recommend it.
Interesting insight to the mental strain on people. It expanded my definition of sexual abuse and the damage that can and does occur. I would recommend it to everyone who thinks they are old enough for a sexual relationship. There is a lot of brutal true of how sex is used so wrongly by so many. There are elements of this damage in "healthy" marital relationships. The book makes me more considerate of my spouse. I also have three daughters and it provides for more information so I can better education them about the negative, and if protected very positive side of sex.
I liked the honesty and hope this book has to offer. Nothing candy coated.I sincerely felt very alone prior to reading this book . Finding out others suffer and heal was rewarding and inspiring.
